In 1993, after having been in the remodeling industry for over ten
years, I found myself disillusioned. Although I loved the business
of making people happy by helping to improve their home, I felt
that the industry was living up to it’s less than stellar reputation.
At the time, I was employed with one of the more reputable remodeling
firms in Baltimore. They were placing more emphasis on getting
the “sale” as
opposed to delivering customer satisfaction. It became “promise
anything to get the job, and then deliver as little as possible
to protect profits.” Further, service was kept to a minimum
because they applied more of a band-aid approach. This approach
would temporarily
mend a problem until the one-year installation warranty (required
by law) ran out. Quality of products and pride in workmanship seemed
to be gone by era. When the product did fail, whether due to manufacturing
or installation, the finger pointing started and the homeowner
was stuck in the middle.
Why couldn't a homeowner find a remodeling company to perform
the work they promised and stand behind that work? When a homeowner
needed service on that remodeling project that they invested their
hard earned money in, why did they always have to get the run around?
Why did they have to pay for a service that should have been right
in the first place? These were questions I posed to my wife. Her
response was, “Joe, for homeowners to find that, you would
have to start a company of your own.” That response launched
the beginning of American Design and Build.
The concept was simple; offer the highest quality windows, doors,
siding and sunrooms.
In addition, have each of those installed only by experts in each
of their respected fields. Offer the products
at the lowest possible price, and support the products, labor and
materials, for as long as the manufacturers’ warranty. In other
words, the product would perform as promised now and in the future
and there would never be a charge for service.
That was the concept in our dining room ten years ago. Others in
the industry told me that I was crazy, that the service cost would
put us out of business. Well, homeowners embraced the concept and
referrals streamed in. These homeowners wanted their friends and
relatives to “experience” American Design and Build.
Fourteen years later, we no longer work out of our dining room.
In fact, we recently moved from our 1200 square foot office building
in Jarrettsville
to our 6500 square foot state of the art showroom in Bel Air. One
thing that has not changed is our original concept. In fact, our
showroom is another step towards making a remodeling project with
American Design and Build a unique and pleasurable “experience.” We
really do believe in “restoring the pride in your home for
today… and tomorrow.”
I invite you to stop by our showroom today
or get your free in-home estimate. Experience
for yourself why American Design and Build is referred more often than any other remodeling company in
the state.
Yours truly,
Joseph A. Tunney, President
